Yeah.. always a big issue in Hollow. Mainly as Hollow has always been as much a social scene as a game, facilitated by the ooc channels and tells, and the habit of 'ooclies' (all of which I have taken full advantage of myself, mind) and ooc cliques.
Problem is when In-Character actions get taken OOCly, and Out-Of-Character stuff gets taken ICly. Like, "I do not like you, so my char will hate your char on sight, and for no IC reason whatsoever." Or, "You char is mean to my char icly, so I assume you are a horrible person oocly." And vice versa. Just poor rp. It's on par with the nutjobs who harass 'evil' soapie stars with death threats...
I could go on for years about the different kinds of ic/ooc crossover and why they are bad. But instead, a gentle reminder: it's a game. A game that is always played better when you treat your char and those of others as what they are: fictional characters, albeit ones you may care for and have invested a lot of time and effort into. And yes, maybe just a bit of yourself. All the very best chars I've known reflect some aspect or other of thier creator. But all the same, your char is not you. And the rp world is very far from real life. A good thing to remember.
That said, and on the other hand, I don't know how many people I've heard use that saying as an excuse to have thier chars act like utter sociopathic bastards, disrupting rp or wrecking a complex and time-costly storyline because it suits them to do so, with no regard to the other player's feelings. "It's a game." Uh-huh, yeah, right. Until I decide my char might have had enough of their crap, and and give them back a dose of nastiness. Then, watch 'em hotfoot it to ooc tells or aim, "What the hell are you doing? *SULK*" Ironically, these are also usually the one who bleat the loudest about the evils of IC/OOC crossover. Go figure.
I have been known to flat-out refuse to rp with rude, whiny, manipulative, poor examples of human beings, who take thier inner garbage IC. Or who do ucky weird things like stalk me or my RL boyfriend through the game. I see nothing wrong with refusing to rp at all with someone who creeps you out, or uses thier char to take out some ooc grudge, or just acts like a complete idiot every moment they're logged in, or whatever makes your rp un-enjoyable. That might be considered ooc/ ic crossover. I don't really care. I call it a reasonable response to people who piss me off consistently. I don't put up with it IRL, so why should I when it's masked ICly.
Anyways, I'm expecting a few comments on this topic, because it is such a big issue in Hollow. Feel free to add your favourite examples, or express your opinion, below.
