I wish this post was not necessary, but it has become evident that it is, indeed necessary. It might be confusing to some trying to get into the Cabal, or thinking about trying to get into the Cabal why it is that some people get in quickly while others are still waiting on a mysterious decision that seems to not follow any known criteria. To be honest, there is no set criteria. Some players hit the jack-pot, and come to us with characters that seem to fit perfectly. Others aren't quite there, and so they wait and wait and wait with no visible progress. So, I'm going to try to break it down into something a little clearer.
1. We ARE NOT a mmorpg Guild/Clan/Collective
We don't have a checklist of things for you to do. There is no set way of getting into the clan. Generally, membership is based off of a gut instinctual choice determined by ic and ooc interactions. So, under this idea it might seem really dumb to some people -- you've done what the clan leaders have asked, but you're still not in! Why? Well, we can give you an idea of what you need to do to get in, but that doesn't mean you WILL get in. We're not going to tell you "No." either, because we believe that there aren't any requirements to fail. Even if you don't get in now, there's a chance you can get in later, and we won't block you from that chance.
2. RP -- and character story -- is first.
I know I tell people who ask "how do I get into the Cabal?" to rp with members as much as possible. I think I've been misunderstood on several cases. Rping with Cabal is not about checking your writing. We DO NOT HAVE A WRITING REQUIREMENT. Period. End of story. What we look for in rp is:
a. An interest in the development and continuing creation of your character.
b. An interest in involving your character in new ideas and storylines (it should be noted that you DO NOT need to be in the Cabal to participate in Cabal storylines).
c. An interest in Cabal plots/storylines both oocly and icly, as well as an ic interest within the Cabal's members.
d. A desire to MAKE SENSE with your rp. Yes, rping on the fly is nice. . .but why? I think a lot of people believe that on the fly rp is all that is expected, and that's not true. Involve Cabal members in storylines that you are building for your character, and ask if there's any way YOU can participate in ongoing storylines.
e. Your character's usefulness. No, you don't need to have a wicked fighter. Maybe you have a scribe or a craftsman of some kind. We like useful characters. A lot.
f. Decisions made on the basis of the character. Just because you do or don't want your character to do something doesn't mean your character wants the same thing.
g. Respect. Respect others' characters, and respect others.
h. GOOD ROLEPLAY. This involves all of the above. It involves a good many of things included in the RP help sections of this forum, and DOES NOT necessarily involve good writing. I've seen plenty of good writers who do not necessarily make good rpers. Do you autoplace other people's characters when you enter a room? Do you let your character know things she/he shouldn't? Do you place insults or assumptions in your post that are more, shall we say, oocly inspired than icly? Do you try to let others' characters be in the spotlight as much as your own? These questions, and many more, are the right way to go about thinking on how you rp. It's about what's in the content -- not how pretty it looks.
i. Interest in your character. We don't appreciate characters who are linear or 2d. The more effort you put into your character, and making him/her a 3d individual who is REALISTIC and BELIEVABLE, the more we will put effort into rping you into the Cabal.
3. Manners and Respect.
It is very, very important to us that no matter how your character feels icly that you treat people oocly with respect and good manners(and, additionally, if you feel that Cabal members are not treating you so please let leadership know). This IS NECESSARY. Hateful, spiteful or otherwise immature actions will affect your shot at getting in. And, well, humility doesn't hurt either folks. There is no excuse for being arrogant.
4. Appropriateness of rp.
Let me make this clear to all of you. If you like cybering, sex-slave plots, or simply like going overboard in sexuality. . .we don't so much like that. If you like breaking rules with your rp, or taking it too far -- you're not going to cut it. If I or any other clan leaders so much as hear a whisper of you being involved with any of that, consider yourself on the short track to not getting into the Cabal. End of story.
5. Desire to learn.
No one is perfect. If you think that you know it all in terms of rp or writing think again. Arrogance and haughtiness are not acceptable oocly. I, Tenebrae, Leoxander, Caedan, Kasyr, Sidonia, Isen or any other member of the Cabal are NOT in ANY WAY finished learning about writing or rp. There is always room for improvement. If you can admit this to yourself then you are well on the way to being Cabal ready.
6. Wanting in for the right reasons.
I cannot tell any of you exactly how tired I am of people wanting to get in merely because they think that if they get in they are somehow the cream of the crop of rpers. The Cabal is a place for you to develop your character in a rp rich environment. It is also a place where your character needs to fit in. If you just want in because you think that makes you somehow an uber rper or because it'll give you a status you'll find yourself not in the Cabal.
7. The right way in. . . .if there indeed is one.
Ask yourself what you can do for your rp community. Develop an outstanding stand-alone character. Be creative with ideas and plots. Get involved. Ask yourself if you can -truly- see your character in the Cabal, and how your character could fit in the Cabal. When trying to rp with Cabal members, DO NOT ask repeatedly. Instead, start up a rp somewhere. I guaruntee you that if you rp something interesting, Cabal will come to you. Be someone supportive, polite and respectful to rp with.
Most of all, please take all of this information as encouragement and support. We do believe in you. You need to show us first that you want to put in the effort and be dedicated. Believe me when I say that it is as frustrating to us as it is for you when we put forth effort and do not see any of it returned.
If you have ANY questions do not hesitate to ask here or privately. I will do my utmost best to answer them honestly and thoughtfully.
Thank you,
Kat
